Perceptual Linear Filters: Low-Order ARMA Approximation for Sound Synthesis
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper deals with the approximation of a given frequency response by a low-order linear ARMA filter (Auto-Regressive Moving Average). The aim of this work is the audio synthesis, then to improve the perceptual quality, a criterion based on human listening is defined and minimized. Two complementary approaches are proposed here for solving this non-linear and non-convex problem: first, a weighted version of the Iterative Prefiltering, second, an adaptation of the Gauss-Newton method. This algorithm is adapted to guarantee the causality/stability of the obtained filter, and eventually its minimum phase property. The benefit of the new method is illustrated and evaluated.

Applying Balanced Model Truncation to Sound Analysis/Synthesis Models
Balanced Model Truncation (BMT) is a powerful technique that can be used to greatly reduce the order of certain digital filters with little distortion to their frequency and phase responses. Since digital filters are commonly used in computer music applications, BMT may be a tool of considerable practical use. To demonstrate this potential, BMT is applied to an autoregressive (AR) drum sound mo...
متن کاملAn approximation to the Volterra series with multiple linear ARMA filters
Nonlinear filtering based on the Volterra series expansion is a powerful universal tool in signal processing. Due to the problem of increased complexity for higher orders and filter lengths, approximations up to third order nonlinearities using linear FIR-filters and multipliers have been developed earlier, called Multi Memory Decomposition (MMD). In our paper we go a step further in this appro...

متن کاملPerceptual Representations for Classification of Everyday Sounds
In the recognition and classification of sounds, extracting perceptually and biologically relevant features yields much better results than the standard low-level methods (e.g zero-crossings, roll-off, centroid, energy, etc.). Gamma-tone filters are biologically relevant, as they simulate the motion of the basilar membrane. The representation techniques that we propose in this paper make use of...
متن کاملSimulation of Piano Sustain-pedal Effect by Parallel Second-order Filters
This paper presents a sustain-pedal effect simulation algorithm for piano synthesis, by using parallel second-order filters. A robust two-step filter design procedure, based on frequency-zooming ARMA modeling and least squares fit, is applied to calibrate the algorithm from impulse responses of the soundboard and the string register. The model takes into account the differences in coupling betw...
